This is the photo collection by Tadashi Kawamata, a contemporary artist who works worldwide, now based in Paris, which consists of triple boxed editions under 3 themes, each with 64 photo cards inside. The photographs are selected from the series named “Field Sketch” of almost 700 snapshots taken in his school days in the 1970s and replicated full-sized.
-
The Selection 1 is titled “Suspended Room”, a series of very minimal photographs taken of white walls and ceilings in the rooms of him and his friends. The Selection 2 is titled “Found Objects”, a series taken of “objects” found in daily life. The Selection 3 is titled “Reflection and Transmission”, a series taken in the motif of light or a boundary, which is highly “photographic” as a result.
-
Behind the collection, we can see his sharp and still undifferentiated eyes on things other than space and structure, on which his perspective has developed remarkably since the 1980s. It shows a section of many possibilities which haven’t taken shape into his work.
-
It is also a peculiar work positioned halfway between “vernacular photography”, which is re-evaluated by Geoffrey Batchen and others, and so-called “artistic photograph” by a photographer.
-
Each selection is the limited edition of 1000. A photo card is attached by hand on the front, which comes in 64 types in each selection. Each comes with a poster-sized diagram overviewing “Field Sketch” exhibited.
